Shall we dance?

This Diwali has been lucky for choreographer Sandip Soparrkar. Last weekend, he was nominated for his work with Britney Spears in her songs 'Womaniser' and 'Circus Tour' at the American Choreography Awards in the Video Choreography category. CS got the dance guru, who also taught some Latin American moves to actor Hrithik Roshan for his next film Kites, to talk about his passion:

1. Step no 1
It was at the age of 13 while I was studyingu00a0 in Germany that I got attracted to dancing. It wasn't love for dance that prompted me to enrol for the dance classes. At the time, it was all the lovely girls coming to the class. I started enjoying and soon realised that it wasn't about beautiful women they came and went, what stayed behind was the pleasure of dancing.

2. Twirling home
Soon I started competing in various European competitions. During one such spell, nine years back, I came to India for a short holiday and never returned. At the time, dance wasn't regarded too highly unless it was a classical form. Even my dad looked down upon it. I've done hotel management and MBA, and so he wished for a conventional career. However today he looks after my Pune, Ahmedabad and Surat branches.

3. Finding the right partner
Dance has taught me that it's not only about you or me. Dance is all about us. Dance forms like the ballroom dance can never be complete without both the partners. Coordination is the key. It requires you to respect your partner and trust him or her completely. Dance has also given me a life partner, Jesse, who also believes in my passion. We fight and we celebrate with dance; it's the way we express to each other.

4. Moving to the beat
It helps me understand myself better. We had once been to Nepal to teach at a school for the mute and deaf. It was here that I actually understood what dance can achieve. We think that our excitement comes from music or costumes, but it is not so. It is about how you feel about your dancing. Even today, I have the same amount of enthusiasm I had when I began.
