Vasan Bala breaks silence over controversies around Alia Bhatt's Jigra

Alia Bhatt's latest release 'Jigra' directed by Vasan Bala has been in the news and favourite among netizens to discuss. The film which was among the most anticipated films of the year had a disappointing start at the box office. Even the Dussehra holiday did not do much benefit for the film that opened to  largely polarised reviews. A week after its release director Vasan Bala has addressed the controversies surrounding the film during a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India.  Divya Khossla Kumar accused makers of plagiarism Divya, actress and wife of T-Series head Bhushan Kumar, accused the makers of copying the plot of her last release titled 'Savi'. She even attacked the makers by posting an Instagram story where she shared a picture of 'Jigra' playing in an empty theatre. She also accused the lead actress of buying tickets herself and faking the box office collections. Her Instagram story led to much speculation and chatter on social media groups of cinema enthusiasts.  Reacting to Divya's accusations, Bala said, "About the first, Savi (2024), came out when we were editing the film. It is already out there. Everyone can watch it and make up their minds. I don’t really want to bring down anyone or add more fuel. " Talking about the accusations of false box office numbers, the director said, "With the false bookings, that, I think, is a distribution question. I don’t think it is that murky at all, but anyone who can investigate and bring out anything is more than welcome." Addressing Bijou Thaangjam's casting mismanagement accusation  The North-Eastern actor had accused the team of mismanagement. He claimed in a post on X that he was selected for a role in the film but was made to wait indefinitely. Expecting a last-minute call to be on set, Thaangajam said that he had to let go of several other opportunities.  He wrote, "I understand how big production houses operate. The director is undeniably talented, but the way they handled this entire situation was deeply unprofessional. For actors like me from the Northeast, it felt particularly dismissive, almost discriminatory. My time was wasted, and I missed out on other opportunities just because they expected I'd be available at a moment's notice".  Responding to the same, Bala said, "With Bijou, I found out this morning what happened because I don't remember seeing his face or audition. He was never told that he was shortlisted. I think they checked his availability. It is normal procedure to call and ask for availability. He probably assumed he got the part. But I am sure there is always a better way of dealing with things. If he has felt bad, then I apologise because these things happen. And also, you want to be a part of something, so I do not blame him. It is easy to be bitter, and there are enough right reasons to be bitter about as well." Bijou responded to Bala's statement by sharing proof of his communication with the casting team who had asked him to wait for a call to be on set. Sharing the proof, he wrote, "Sharing a screenshot of my convo with the casting team for clarity. With over a decade in the industry,I know the struggles of daily rejections. 'PROBABLY ASSUMING' is incorrect. I respect ur stature but I was addressing the mismanagement we often experience". Sharing a screenshot of my convo with the casting team for clarity. Siddique was killed in Mumbai on October 12, reportedly by three members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. This added security for Salman is a precaution because there are fears he might be targeted as well. Now, Vindu Dara Singh has spoken out about the happenings. Vindu Dara Singh stands by Salman Khan amid threats In a new interview, Salman's close friend Vindu Dara Singh shared his feelings about the troubling events happening in the film industry. He told Instant Bollywood, “You have to understand. A different type of law is going on. This is very funny because there is a court and everything. No one knows the truth, and nothing has been proven yet. So it is really shocking and unbelievable what is happening. I hope and pray that better sense prevails and Salman ko kuch na ho (nothing happens to Salman).”           View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Instant Bollywood (@instantbollywood) Somy Ali writes an open letter to Lawrence Bishnoi Yesterday, Salman Khan's ex, Somy Ali, posted a message addressed to Bishnoi on her Instagram feed. Kripya karke mujhe bataye ke yeh kaise ho sakta hai? Hamari puri duniya mai sabse pasand ki jagah Rajasthan hai. Hum aapke mandir aana chahate hain Pooja ke liye par pehle aapse Zoom call ho jaye Aur kuch baatain teh ho jaye Pooja ke baad. Phir yakeen maniyye ke yeh aapke fayade ki he baatain hain. Apna mobile number de dejiye bada ehsaan ho ga aap ka. Shukriya". The Salman Khan connection with Baba Siddiuque murder For those unaware, gangster Lawrence Bishnoi has claimed responsibiltiy for the murder of Baba Siddique which was executed by three men on Saturday, October 12.  A viral post claims that the gangster pulled out the act as the politician was helping Salman Khan. The superstar and the late politician have been family friends for decade. His murder came as a shock for Khan who seen in tears at the latter's residence on Sunday.  Bishnoi and Khan's beef goes back to early 2000s when the superstar was held in a black buck shooting case in Rajasthan. While he spent a week in jail for the crime, the Bishnoi community who consider black bucks sacred have been targetting the actor ever since with death threats.

Shivendra Singh Dungarpur

MAMI festival director: ‘Hope we will have state support next year’

The MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, over the years, has become a symbol of the city’s love for the movies. As the prestigious film gala sees a change of leadership this year, with film archivist Shivendra Singh Dungarpur taking on the role of the festival director, he says the idea is to bring independent cinema to the forefront. The festival, which opens tomorrow, aims to celebrate both emerging and established voices.       “This year, we are in a phase of transition. One [change] is that it’s just MAMI. No festival in the world has a tagline. We have come back to the original name,” starts Dungarpur, addressing head-on that Jio, the long-standing festival sponsor, has pulled out this time. “The second important thing is that [over time], we didn’t feel like a festival. It has to be made into a celebration. We shouldn’t be spread out so massively that a guy from Juhu cannot meet a director, who is presenting [his film] in Goregaon. In film festivals, you should have to make little effort to go and experience the whole thing. Even with limited funding, we have got great programming this time—there is the South Asian competition, novel competition, we’ve got classics and the best of world cinema. But what was essential for me was to have an opening film that is truly Indian.” Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light is the opening film at MAMI This pursuit led him to Payal Kapadia’s Cannes Grand Prix-winning film, All We Imagine as Light. Dungarpur says the drama stands for two things that the festival stands for—the city of Mumbai, and rooting for indie filmmakers. “A young filmmaker finds it difficult to raise funds, then he makes a film, and then he is able to take it to the world. Payal’s film will be an inspiration because it has reached the goal of the Grand Prix. We want to make sure that this festival is not about big films, it’s about independent films. We want it to be a people’s festival.” Kapadia started her career with Dungarpur at Film Heritage Foundation, and to have his mentee’s work open the festival is a moment of great pride for him. “I have a special relationship with her. I told her that All We Imagine as Light should be the opening film for MAMI because it reflects the city. It’s rare to find a film that reflects everyone’s struggle in this city; a city where people come from different parts of the country and make a home. Usually foreign movies are chosen as the opening film. But to me, Payal’s film was the correct catalyst. There is so much buzz around this movie. Our phones have not stopped ringing; people want to come and see it. It’s wonderful to see this kind of response for an independent film. India doesn’t have the concept of a grant. It’s very tough for an independent filmmaker. That’s why you see so many sources of funding in Payal’s movie.” Dungarpur believes MAMI has the potential to be on par with international film festivals like Venice and Cannes. He notes that the lack of state support holds India back from making a festival of that scale. “If a movie goes to Cannes or Venice, then it goes everywhere else. I want to make Mumbai [one such destination for cinema]. We are hoping that by next year, we will have support from the state because the festival represents the city and its spirit. We want the state to be involved. You will see the reflection of state’s support of what the coming days and the next six years are going to be like.” Mumbai’s date with MAMI . Over six days, the festival will showcase 110-plus films from over 45 countries. These include Demi Moore’s The Substance, Emilia Perez that is France’s official entry to the 2025 Oscars, and Manoj Bajpayee’s Despatch.  . To attend screenings and events, one needs to register for a delegate badge on the MAMI website. There are badges for the press, industry delegates, cinephiles as well as for senior citizens. . Screenings and events will be spread across prominent venues in Mumbai, including Regal Cinema and PVR Juhu. Soho House Mumbai will host the Industry Programme from October 21 to 23.

Have you heard? Shah Rukh Khan to play an assassin in 'King'

Thriller aborted, romcom on  It is known that Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor are teaming up for a film produced by Dinesh Vijan. Not many know that the filmmaker was initially planning a thriller, titled Spyder, with the two actors and Dasvi (2022) director Tushar Jalota at the helm. However, it is now being said that over the past few months, the makers and Sidharth felt that their script’s box-office potential could be limited as audiences increasingly prefer this genre in the OTT space. After brainstorming on other subjects, the trio narrowed down to a romantic comedy. That’s when the makers offered the script to Janhvi, who liked it and gave her nod to the film, tentatively titled Param Sundari. The title is inspired by the song from Dinesh’s Mimi (2021), which also saw leading lady Kriti Sanon bag her first National Award for Best Actress. Pre-production on Param Sundari is underway and the makers are planning to begin filming in December.   No Oscar plans  When asked if she was hurt that her Cannes Grand Prix winner, All We Imagine as Light, wasn’t chosen as India’s entry for the Oscars, director Payal Kapadia rooted for Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies instead. Calling it a great film, she said, “All of us loved it. I loved Kiran Rao’s previous film too. I’m just happy that it is going there.” Probed if she would attempt  taking her film to the Academy Awards independently, Payal shared, “It releases in America on November 15. The distribution [team] will decide that once it releases.” Starring Kani Kusruti, Chhaya Kadam and Divyaprabha, All We Imagine as Light opens in India on November 22. Praising Rana Daggubati and his distribution team for putting their might behind it, Payal added, “They had a planned distribution approach. They were sensitive to the understanding that it is not a movie that can just be released nationwide without a thought to the kind of film it is. I respected that outlook to distribution.”  Certified, at last! After a long battle, including a legal one, Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency has finally cleared the censor hurdle. The release of the period political drama, helmed by the actor-producer, previously slated for September 6, had to be deferred due to protests from various quarters, including Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). The makers were also embroiled in a court case with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and eventually agreed to the recommended modifications to facilitate the movie’s theatrical release. Kangana, who plays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who declared Emergency in the country in June 1975, shared the update on social media, saying, “We’re glad to announce that we’ve received the censor certificate for our movie Emergency. We will be announcing the release date soon. Thank you for your patience and support.” Sources claim that the political drama will open after the upcoming Punjab elections.  Assassin games  Shah Rukh Khan, who started the trend of playing anti-hero in the early 1990s, with films like Darr, Baazigar (1993) and Anjaam (1994), is said to return to the grey zone again. Rumours are rife that the superstar plays an assassin in director Sujoy Ghosh’s King, which also marks daughter Suhana Khan’s big-screen debut. The buzz about SRK playing an assassin has triggered a lot of curiosity among netizens, who are now reminded of his remark at Locarno a few weeks ago. Addressing a query about playing a negative role again, SRK had said, “I think I have a new way of playing a bad guy.”  To shoot more or not?  While a lot has been said about Salman Khan’s cameo as Chulbul Pandey in Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again, a source tells us that the superstar shot his portions for the Ajay Devgn-starrer about three months ago. Given Salman’s superstardom, Rohit thought of enhancing his special role in the movie, and hence met him on the set of Sikandar to discuss the possibility of shooting for a day to make his cameo extra special. However, in the wake of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s threats to Salman, it remains to be seen if the additional shoot will happen. The Diwali release also stars Kareena Kapoor Khan, Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Tiger Shroff.  Somy batting for Salman  Somy Ali took to social media to write a direct message to Lawrence Bishnoi, who has been threatening her ex, Salman Khan. Alongside a picture of the gangster, she wrote, “Namaste, Lawrence bhai. I’ve heard and seen about you doing Zoom calls from jail. I want to talk to you, so let me know how this can happen.” Stating that Rajasthan is their favourite place in the whole world, Somy added, “We want to come to your temple for worship, but let’s have a Zoom call first and we can have some talks after the worship. Then, believe that these are the things for your benefit.” Asking for Lawrence’s mobile number, she concluded, saying, “It will be a great favour for you. Thank you.”  Motherhood beckons  Radhika Apte is set to welcome her bundle of joy with musician-husband Benedict Taylor. The actor flaunted her baby bump at the première of her gender-bending comedy, Sister Midnight, at the BFI London Film Festival. She also shared pictures from the grand event on her social media handle, saying, “Sister Midnight UK Premiere #lff2024.” However, she didn’t mention a word about her journey to motherhood. OK Computer co-actor Vijay Varma gave a shout-out to her. Producer Guneet Monga Kapoor also dropped hearts and shared her best wishes for the Vikram Vedha (2022) actor.

Over the past 11 years, the foundation has helped over 2,500 underprivileged patients battling head and neck cancer. Mirpuri shares that the cause is personal “due to a loss in my family and we are thankful to Karan for believing in it and hosting the fundraiser through a live auction.” Mirpuri adds, “All the funds raised go directly to the hospital. This is a completely transparent initiative—every rupee collected goes straight to the hospital. I consider myself merely a medium. With the support of my friends, we have successfully raised approximately R10 crore and contributed it to Tata Memorial Hospital over the past 11 years. The last time Karan hosted the event, he created magic, helping us raise an incredible amount. This year, we hope to double that impact.”
