The importance and credibility of casting process in Bollywood took centrestage on the second day of the ongoing Jagran Film Festival here. Popular casting director Mukesh Chhabra, filmmaker Vibhu Puri, actors Vipin Sharma and Meenakshi Dixit along with Iranian actress Mozhgan Taraneh discussed the topic at length and the auditorium, as expected, was packed to the hilt by aspiring actors.

While Vibhu revealed that he defines physical characteristics to casting directors to get appropriate actors for his films, the casting directors come on board with different perspectives that help the director find a good actor. Adding to the statement, Mukesh says, “I make sure that I go out to real places to find real characters. In fact, I do not take a briefing from a director and instead just read the script and try and find the best characters for the film.”

Vipin, on the other hand, feels that confidence holds the key to success for every actor. “I was supposed to play one of the teachers in Taare Zameen Par, but I wanted to play the dad’s role. So, I went ahead for the audition and bagged the role. If you are honest and dedicated, you will find work in this industry,” said the actor. Meenakshi and Mozhgan also shared their experiences.

Mukesh requested all the young, aspiring actors to not let negativity kill their aspirations. “Many actors come to Mumbai to make a career in Bollywood. But then, they hear so many things about the industry that they fill themselves with negativity which affects their work. When people say casting directors choose people close to them, don’t believe them. When you go for auditions, don’t be afraid of anything, be honest and you will get work,” he added.
