16 November,2024 08:36 AM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentDanish Aslam, who made his directorial debut with the rom-com, Break Ke Baad (2010), is surprised that Bollywood has steered away from the genre in the past decade. As an ardent fan of the genre, the director has attempted to tell a story of modern love with his latest release, Khwabon Ka Jhamela. “The [rom-com] genre that we had in the early 2000s, went away in the last 10 to 12 years. We left that zone of Hum Tum [2004], Salaam Namaste [2005], and went into heartland stories,” he reflects. Danish Aslam Aslam believes the JioCinema offering, starring Prateik Babbar and Sayani Gupta, has the potential to fill that void. “I feel Khwabon Ka Jhamela is one of the films that fills that gap,” he says optimistically, before adding that filmmakers will always have something new to say with love stories. “Earlier, there were trunk calls, then phones, mobile phones, Internet, and now Tinder. The language of love changes every few years. Which is why the older rom-coms get dated and we need to update the genre every few years.” With Khwabon Ka Jhamela having reached the audience, the director is now focusing on his next that sees him reunite with his Break Ke Baad actor Imran Khan. But Aslam is guarded when asked about the project, only saying, “It’s still a work-in-progress. When things are finalised, I’ll be happy to talk about it.”
16 November,2024 08:13 AM IST | Mumbai | Hiren KotwaniWhat’s a heist thriller without a last-minute twist? In this case, it’s off screen. In late May, Saif Ali Khan and Jaideep Ahlawat had wrapped up Jewel Thief—The Red Sun Chapter, following a 10-day schedule in Budapest and a patchwork shoot in Mumbai. But now, it turns out the shoot is not quite over. mid-day has learnt that the unit will report back to the set to film two songs and re-shoot some scenes. Surprisingly, the new portions will be shot not by director Robbie Grewal, but by Kookie Gulati of The Big Bull (2021) fame. From what we’ve heard, the inclusions have been recommended by Siddharth Anand, who has written and produced the crime thriller that sees Khan and Ahlawat’s characters in a battle of wits. Sources tell us that after the Budapest schedule was wrapped up in May-end, Grewal dove headlong into the film’s post-production. “The team completed the patchwork by June. But recently, Siddharth felt that some scenes needed to be revisited to up the heist thriller’s slick feel. He also was of the opinion that two more songs would enhance its appeal. While Robbie felt the existing cut is pacy and slick enough, he understood the producer’s need to make it more appealing to the audience with the new numbers. So, for now, Robbie is focusing on the post-production while Siddharth has roped in Kookie to film the additional parts,” reveals a source. Kookie Gulati and Robbie Grewal Gulati was Anand’s first choice for the job as he has directed over 300 music videos. The source adds, “The first song and a few scenes, featuring Saif and leading lady Nikita Dutta, will be shot in Alibaug this weekend. Sid has briefed Kookie that the sequences, which are being re-shot, need to have more drama and action. Another song will be filmed at Mehboob Studios with the entire cast later this month. The dance track will be choreographed by Shazia Samji and Piyush Bhagat.” Khan, who sports long hair and a beard in the movie, has grown his hair again for the upcoming stint. When mid-day reached out to Grewal, he said, “We were to shoot [these portions] in August, but it got pushed to November. Since I was already committed to an Amazon show in this [window], I couldn’t do it. Kookie was kind enough to step in and help us out.”
16 November,2024 07:58 AM IST | Mumbai | Upala KBRThe Sabarmati ReportU/A: DramaDir: Dheeraj SarnaCast: Vikrant Massey, Raashii Khanna, Ridhi DograRating: 1.5/5 India is now Bharat. Hindi is the country’s new identity. Hindu-Muslim... Just some of the words and sentences that make up the countless WhatsApp forwards that greet us on a regular basis, especially if we are part of those unfortunate society and office groups. Imagine these opinions, often passed as truth, fleshed out into a screenplay, and you get The Sabarmati Report. Vikrant Massey, Raashii Khanna, and Ridhi Dogra lead this drama that claims to open our eyes to the truth that has remained invisible for the last 22 years. Dheeraj Sarna has helmed the film that has Ektaa R Kapoor as one of its producers. The film revisits the 2002 Sabarmati Express fire tragedy that led to the death of 59 passengers. Sarna designs the film as an investigation into the incident as well as an exhausting takedown of the Indian media. Dogra is a star reporter of a fictional channel, EBT News, who, along with cameraperson (Massey), goes to Godhra, Gujarat, to cover the burning of two bogies of the Sabarmati Express. On the basis of their ground reporting, including interactions with people present at the site, both of them are led to believe that what is being called an accident is a conspiracy. But after a call from her editor, Dogra’s Manika Rajpurohit chooses to call it an accident, leaving Massey’s Samar Kumar shocked. He then speaks to the victims and their families, and tapes their statements. Contrary to his hope, the office upholds the version of the English-speaking Rajpurohit. Kumar is fired. His life derails in the most typical style—girlfriend breaks up with him, no one hires him, and he takes to alcohol. Five years later, a meeting with a young reporter, Amrita Gill (Khanna), brings him another chance at unravelling the truth and presenting it to the country. The two revisit Godhra and begin their investigation. It’s a struggle to write about The Sabarmati Report because for much of the film, we were appalled, disgusted, and shocked at how casually the makers used bigotry to take the narrative forward. At the same time, they make the film wear the veil of truth-finding and nationalism. A film, however complex, can be reviewed, but propaganda masked as art? No thanks.
