The constitution of India mentions health as one of its fundamental rights, and rightly so; the Government of Maharashtra has set up public hospitals in Mumbai to serve its citizens. Each of these hospitals is centrally located across the city and well-equipped to serve the patients.   Mumbai is the financial capital of India, a.k.a the 'City of Dreams' or the 'City that never sleeps 'has always accommodated everyone who has arrived here to fulfil their dreams and aspiration. 


And, hence the Government hospitals in Mumbai provide subsidized or low-cost medical treatment and good health for its citizens.


 

Let us begin with a list of public hospitals in Mumbai:

 

  1. Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital

It is one of the oldest free hospitals located in south Mumbai. It was established in 1874 with the joint funds of the Government and Gokuldas Tejpal, one of the most successful business people and philanthropists of Mumbai. Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital, also known as G. T. Hospital, is affiliated with Grant Government Medical College and Sir J. J. Group of Hospitals.

The G.T. Hospital serves more than 10,000 inpatients and more than 2,50,000 outpatients annually with a 500+ bed capacity. There is a dedicated OPD facility and pathology services that include X-ray, ECG, C.T. Scan, MRI, minor surgery, a 24-hour casualty/emergency department. The hospital can serve nearly 650+ OPD and new patients daily.

  1. D. Y. Patil Hospital

D.Y. Patil Hospital is yet another well-equipped hospital offer state-of-the-art treatment to patients from all walks of life. Their OPD offers comprehensive treatment in pediatrics, onco-surgery, cardiology, neurology, pulmonary medicine, general and minimal access surgery, general medicine, and so on.

Cama & Albless Hospital, also known as Cama Hospital treats only women and children. The hospital is equipped with 367-bed capacity

Recently, it has received funds from the government and Tata Funds to restore its structure and improve the OPD department, especially for gynecology patients, including a dedicated uro-gynaecology department. These departments will serve underprivileged patients who have access to private medical services.

  1. Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy Hospital

Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy Hospital in Byculla is also one of the oldest government hospitals in Mumbai. The hospital has more than 2800 beds and treats 1,200,000 outpatients and 80,000 inpatients daily. It offers broad and super speciality treatment with ICU and ventilator support and multiple operation theatre and outpatient departments.

  1. KEM Hospital

King Edward Memorial Hospital, or KEM hospital, was established in 1926 to provide medical training and care. Today, KEM hospital is one of the most important public hospitals in Mumbai with an 1800 bed capacity and treats nearly 1.8 million outpatients and 850,000 inpatients annually. The hospital is fortified by 550 resident doctors and 390 staff physicians trained to provide basic, specialized medical and surgical care. In addition, the KEM hospital serves underprivileged members of society with highly subsidized or free medical treatment.

  1. St. George's Hospital

George's Hospital is a free multispeciality hospital located in the Fort area of Mumbai, near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), one of the major transport systems of Mumbai. It has been operational since the end of 1892 and has been serving the public. Even today, the Government of Maharashtra runs this free hospital with approximately 460 beds
