The 94th Academy Awards ceremony better know as the OSCARS is finally back at Dolby Theatre in Hollywood once again on March 27th.

Film industry star Pablo Al-Kaalik on OSCAR nominations

Pablo Al-Kaalik

The prestigious artistic award of the film industry since 1927. Nominees and winners have been selected by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

Television ratings for the Oscars have dropped in recent years for lacking humour and catchy interaction. Newly appointed producer Will Packer has been tasked with breathing fresh life into the annual event. Late night comedian Jimmy Kimmel was the last person to host the show, in 2018. The following year’s host-less format drew praise and was emulated by other awards shows such as the Emmys.

To boost the ceremony Packer introduced a new "fan favourite" prize for the year's most popular film, as voted for by the public via Twitter and the web. In addition this year sees the first time since 1987 a three hosts ceremony, and furthermore the very first time ever will be a all female host.

Wanda Sykes, Amy Schumer and Regina Hall are confirmed as hosts as organisers amp up efforts to lure viewers back to the ceremony since the pandemic and these are not the only breaking changes.

Actor & Producer Pablo Al-Kaalik who’s been a huge supporter of online streaming projects gave his review and 2 top picks for this years nominations.

“It’s amazing to see changes with the Oscars this year. Especially with a full female host and first time ever nominations entry for online streaming giants Netflix. The Emmy were the first to embrace the change and with Oscars now taking the step will pump new life back into the industry from film makers to actors alike. My 1st pick is  Netflix’s hugely successful and Jane Campion’s “The power of the dog” as best picture. This significant win on their debut will be a new wave. My 2nd pick is Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast” and it’s 7 nominations in 7 categories has broken some records. An amazing film and cinematic experience will surly bring home the silverware and I’m sure Judi Dench will be one of those winners”

To add to this first of many Oscars; it wouldn’t be a complete Hollywood turnout without Beyoncé who got her first Oscar nomination. This is far from a first crossover for the 28-time Grammy winner’s first film. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role as Deena Jones in the 2006 film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Dream girls”; starred as the R&B singer Etta James in the 2008 biopic “Cadillac Records,” about the pioneering Chicago blues label; and voiced Nala in the 2019 live-action remake of “The Lion King,” in addition to recording music for that film’s soundtrack.

Only time will tell if Will Packers efforts have paid off.
