Chennai: Leander Paes' doubles campaign came to a shuddering end when his partner Marcel Granollers of Spain pulled out due to illness. Paes and Granollers were due to play Austin Krajicek (USA) and Benoit Paire (France) for a place in the quarter-finals.

Leander expressed his anguish later: "It's disappointing to be unable to play today in front of my home fans. I feel for Marcel and wish him a speedy recovery ahead of the Australian Open."

The Australian Open begins in Melbourne on January 18.
