The 29-year-old is one goal shy of Sir Bobby Charlton's record haul of 49 and began from the outset in Serravalle, where Roy Hodgson handed Jonjo Shelvey and Jamie Vardy their first international starts.
Wantaway Everton defender John Stones started in defence, while Luke Shaw and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made their first Three Lions appearances since November.
There was a nice, convivial atmosphere around Serravalle ahead of the match, although some thoughtless England fans overshadowed that by chanting an anti-IRA song after bellowing 'no surrender' during the national anthem.
