Bogota: Mario Yepes, the former Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan defender who captained Colombia to the 2014 World Cup quarter-finals, has retired from football.
"102 matches with the national team, six goals and a dream World Cup. A great retires from football #MarioYepes#" announced the Colombian football federation on Twitter on Wednesday.
Yepes started out at Deportivo Cali, moving on to River Plate, Nantes, PSG, Chievo and Milan. He ends his playing career with San Lorenzo, the Argentine side he joined in November.
At last year's World Cup he earned his 100th cap in his country's second group game against Ivory Coast, becoming only the third Colombian player to reach that milestone.
Colombia's best ever World Cup showing was ended 2-1 by Brazil in the last eight. Yepes was part of the Colombian team that claimed the 2001 Copa America title.
