Security for the 2012 London Olympics is being planned with a severe terror threat in mind and spectators can expect airport-style measures, the police officer in charge said last night.

Scotland Yard Assistant Commissioner Chris Allison said Britain was sadly experienced in dealing with terror attacks and people going to events would be used to the kind of measures necessary to keep the Games safe.

National Olympic Security Coordinator Allison insisted the military would not be on the streets and said his team had learnt from previous Olympics to handle such mammoth events. "There are a number of risks against the Games ufffd they can come from public order, some form of natural disaster, but the biggest one is terrorism.

"We're planning against the backdrop of a severe threat," he told reporters at Scotland Yard police headquarters.
