Gooch was part of the England team that sent India crashing out of the 1987 World Cup with a stunning win in the semi-final at Mumbai. The 57-year-old said history could repeat at the M Chinnaswamy stadium here today.

"I found a similar situation in 1987 when India were firm favourites, but ultimately we won. It might turnout the same way here," Gooch, the batting consultant of the current England side, told SUNDAY MiD DAY on the eve of the crucial Group B tie.

"Everybody is saying India are the favourites. I won't be surprised if England win here. It's a gut feeling but this team can surprise many people. I can see the self-belief in this English team," said Gooch who played a match-winning knock of 115 at the Wankhede 24 years ago.
