Manchester United travel to West Bromwich Albion for their season-opening game on Sunday despite violence which had threatened to force the postponement of several Premier League fixtures.

"It's been an absolutely depressing week when you see the things happening in our country," Ferguson said, adding that he was baffled by the varied profiles of some of the troublemakers.

"The really disturbing thing when you think what the hell is going on is, here you are, an Olympic ambassador, an assistant school teacher and a millionaire's daughter," he said.

"What are their parents thinking at this very moment in time? Have they no pride in their upbringing? "I have read about it and it's depressing. They really want to waken up and appreciate the society they are in and appreciate what their parents have done for them and given the opportunity."
