Estimated 100 injured in Peru stadium collapse

An estimated 100 people were injured when a metal platform collapsed at a football stadium during a youth match in Lima, rescue workers said.

The accident occurred during a match at the big Estadio Monumental operated by the Club Universitario de Deportes.

Alfonso Panizo, a spokesman for the fire department, estimated that 100 children and adults were taken to hospitals after falling from the platform.

Earlier, a health official said 53 people were hospitalized when the metal structure collapsed. One witness told RPP radio the platform appeared to collapse from excess weight.

The witness said a large crowd was attending the Copa Crema youth cup match.
