Sydney: Close friends and family have attended a private funeral for Richie Benaud.

His funeral in Sydney was followed by a commemoration service in which Ian Chappell, Shane Warne and Mark Taylor were among the former Australia players invited, along with current Test captain Michael Clarke.

Benaud, doyen of cricket commentators for generations and also Australia captain himself in his playing days as a leg-spinning all-rounder, died last week at the age of 84.

Australia's Prime Minister Tony Abbott offered his family a state funeral, but they "kindly declined" that option.
