Donald Trump
Former US President Donald Trump is likely to be acquitted in his impeachment trial as the Democrats on Tuesday failed to garner enough support required from Republican Senators.
The Democrats who have impeached Trump in the House charging him with "incitement of insurrection," needed two-thirds of the vote in Senate. Currently both the Democrats and the Republicans have 50 members each in the 100-seat Senate. "I can't see how you get 17. I think that was a test vote," Republican Senator. John Boozman said after 45 of the 50 Republican Senators voted for the motion that the impeachment trial after Trump left the presidency is unconstitutional.
Wary of angering his voters
A week after his departure from the White House in disgrace, a large-scale Republican defection that would ultimately purge him from the party now appears unlikely.
The Senate vote on Tuesday is a sign that while Trump may be held in low regard in Washington following the riots, a large swath of Republicans is leery of crossing his supporters, who remain the majority of the party's voters. Trump's team has given allies an informal blessing to campaign against the 10 House Republicans who voted in favour of impeachment.
