New Algorithm Turns Smartphone Videos into Detailed 3D Models

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University and NVIDIA have developed a neural surface reconstruction algorithm called Neuralangelo that can create highly accurate 3D models from smartphone videos or drone footage. The algorithm uses neural networks and achieves submillimeter accuracy, enabling the precise rendering of objects, statues, buildings, and entire environments. Previous 3D surface reconstruction methods were slow and required manual input, but Neuralangelo democratises the process and makes it accessible to anyone with a smartphone.
