customer and cutter. So, a thick black indelible marker stripe bisects the floor of his shop, marked No Ladies Beyond This Line.

Swanton (60) says he has nothing against the ladies, but just wants some space where men can do what men do.

"Men like to come here and have their hair cut without the intrusion of a lady putting her oar in," he said.

Swanton said the women's influence can be time consuming. "It can be a problem for the barber. They are trying to do two haircuts the one she wants and the one he wants. We welcome women with their husbands, sons, or boyfriends. They can come for a cup of tea and a chat, but from the waiting area."

He acknowledged his views were old fashioned, but said, "I think my customers certainly like it. There is a trend these days for women to want to go into male sanctuaries... Men, stand up and be counted is what I say, don't be down-trodden."

He added, "My wife is happy with it all. She says men would not walk into a ladies' salon and tell them how to have their legs waxed."

His stance has created a lot of interest, but no problems. "You do get the odd woman putting a toe over the line, but they do not cross it."
