14-year-old Indian-American Sukanya Roy became a trending topic by doing what a surprisingly large number of Indian-Americans seem to do rather easily: She won the National Spelling Bee.

14-year-old Indian-American Sukanya Roy became a trending topic by doing what a surprisingly large number of Indian-Americans seem to do rather easily: She won the National Spelling Bee.

According to news reports, the winning word was 'cymotrichous' an adjective, apparently, for 'having wavy hair'.

Among those who weren't surprised was Pritish Nandy because, in his words, 'we write the language better than most.'

Someone called Ramesh Srivats had a more amusing take: 'If someone tells Shahid Kapoor about Sukanya winning the Spelling Bee, he'd probably respond, Big deal. I too can spell B-E-E.' There was no response from Mr Kapoor. I checked.

Belling that cat

On some days, trending topics make no sense at all. Sparking off for no apparent reason, they clog timelines at random leaving nothing but questions in their wake. Today, it was Tom & Jerry, a cartoon that, in the words of one tweeter, is 'super interesting with no dialogue.' A certain James Urbaniak had a possible explanation: 'Tom and Jerry were both found dead in their New Jersey home in an apparent suicide pact.'

A sea of saffron

Baba Ramdev's followers flocked to Ramlila Maidan, prompting many to share their comments with the rest of us. Debashis Sarkar had a question: 'Instead of histrionics in Delhi, why doesn't Ramdev become part of the electoral process?'

Yash Chawla pointed out that there were more media and politicians at the grounds than 'the common man who wants to learn yoga.'

The most interesting comment came from Suhel Seth. He took time out from thinking up new ways to make India better by tweeting: 'Tomorrow is a historic day. Baba Ramdev on a fast. Stalls available at Ramlila. If anyone wants to sell things, call 1800-BABAFAST. Fast.'

The last word

A message from Shobhaa De: 'Get well soon, V S Naipaul!' Enough said, no?
