Making sense of the good, bad and often strange trending topics online

The fact that 'Delhi Belly' was clogging Twitter timelines worried me at first, because I assumed it was a reference to the bowel related disease. When informed that it was actually a reference to posters of a new film produced by Aamir Khan, it all made sense. Aamir has, after all, always had a knack of clogging timelines just before the release of a film. I also expect him to find a new cause to support in the coming weeks, as the release date draws near.

Also trending were the words 'BSP MLA'. I assumedu00a0-- wrongly, againu00a0-- that a new garland of 1,000-rupee notes had cropped up at the home of some honourable minister. The MLA in question, was Shekhar Tiwari, who had just been sentenced to life imprisonment for killing an engineer in 2008. Turns out he was trending simply because a lot of people wanted to spread that good news.

Ram Jethmalani's decision to appear as Kanimozhi's lawyer in the 2G spectrum scam case got him much attention, none of it particularly good. According to a certain Mihir Bijur, a sign outside Jethmalani's office reads 'I can save you from stuff even God cannot.' Interestingly, the lawyer asked the court to grant his client bail because she was a woman.

Finally, the topic 'Golden Rules of Chennai' yielded a number of comments, presumably from residents of that city. According to Suraj Venkat, one of the rules is 'If you can't pronounce Vazhaipazham properly, you don't know Tamil.' I plead guilty. Also, in Murali Satagopan's words: "In an accident with a government vehicle, you have to pay damages even if it's not your mistake.' Sounds more like a Golden Rule of Delhi, doesn't it?
