The journalists had organized a peaceful protest in front of the Press Club of India in Delhi. Author Arundhati Roy was also spotted at the protest.
The protestors carried banners and posters condemning the crackdown and vouching for press freedom in India.
The protestors said that they were supported by different media organisations and press clubs from across India.
However, the National Union of Journalists (India) backed the police action and also submitted a letter to Commissioner of Police (CP) Sanjay Arora.
Senior journalist Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, who was interrogated as well, spoke extensively at the protest about his experience and behaviour of the police.
The Delhi Police on Tuesday arrested NewsClick founder Purkayastha and Chakravarty after raids on more than 50 locations in different states and questioning several scribes in a case filed under the anti-terror law UAPA following allegations on portal’s funding.
