Who said cricket was just for sports lovers? Techies can now get in line to have their own fun by helping Google map the 13 stadiums that will host the World Cup across the country. The company launched the initiative earlier this month hoping that techies who happen to be true blue cricket fans could map the airport routes, hospitals and restaurants in the vicinity, along with the infrastructure of the stadium in a bid to help the thousands of fans who will be making it to the city to watch the matches.

Product manager Manik Gupta, Google India, said, "Users can draw maps around the schools, businesses and restaurants, and once they've been appraised and reviewed, we will put them up. We started this initiative for map makers and also for people who are passionate about the sport." He added, "Users have already started mapping the stadiums. We just wanted to make the World Cup experience better, especially for those who use smart phones."

Fanspeak
Nikhil Narayana (28), copywriter, said, "I don't know how useful this will be because people generally tend to follow the crowd to get around or even ask for directions." He added, "I don't know how many people will even bother to use it."

The Other Side

Javagal Sreenath, retired cricketer and secretary, Karnataka State Cricket Association, said, "I think it's good and it will be very informative especially in terms of the city's topography. We're always using Google for every little thing and I guess this is just one of them."
