With so many people being arrested, the prison department has expressed concern over the inflow of inmates in the Central Prison, which is already overcrowded.
Although it's an excellent show of dedication on the part of the police force in nabbing anti-social elements, the pressure on the Central Prison is intense, and is proving to be difficult for officials of the prison department.
"The number of inmates coming in is disproportionate to those completing sentences or being released on bail. We have to think about shifting inmates to keep the numbers to a controllable level," said a senior officer at the Central Prison.
Danger lurks
The official also said that the department is suffering from a shortage of staff. There are several sub-jails in the state where only four jail staff are expected to manage between 150-400 inmates and convicts.
"This is a dangerous predicament, and if anything goes wrong, the government will have to take the heat," he added.
Admitting to the shortage
of staff, ADG of Prisons K Srinivas said that the state government has been updated about the issue and has given clearance in this budget to appoint jail staff. "We will start the recruitment process soon, which includes appointment at various levels," Srinivas said.
