Techie's death: Pune police still unsure of cause, weeks after incident

Nearly a week after 32-year-old software engineer Indrajit Chavan lost his life after undergoing a kidney stone removal surgery at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital (DMH) by a team of doctors from the Prime Surgical Hospital (PSH); his family has not yet been informed about the cause of his death. mid-day had earlier reported about the incident in ‘Family cremates techie without his kidney, which is in cop custody', dated February 28.

With his kidney was removed after the operation and stored in a jar by the medical staff, Chavan's kidney is still in the custody of the Kothrud police. The officials have sent the kidney for a chemical analysis and earlier, before Chavan's body was cremated, it was sent for an autopsy to Sassoon General Hospital.

The Kothrud police claim that they are still awaiting the autopsy and chemical analysis reports from Sassoon General Hospital without which they cannot determine the cause of death.

The Chavan family blame medical negligence as the cause of his death.

Vishwajit, Chavan's brother, said, "I had gone to Kothrud police station yesterday and was told that the pathology lab report of the chemical analysis would take at least 20 days."

The cops are playing it safe and waiting for the reports "We are not medical experts and have asked for expert doctors' opinions in this case. We have given the kidney to the pathology lab of and are waiting for the post-mortem and chemical analysis report from pathology lab. We can't say how much time the report will take as the pendency rate at Sassoon is high," said Police Inspector Kalyan Vidhate.

"We have asked doctors at Sassoon hospital to expedite their process and give the post-mortem report and chemical analysis report from pathology lab," said Vidhate.
