Promise to conduct test on baby made by Minister for Women and Child Development Varsharani Gaikwad remains unkept even week after delivery

Despite Minister for Women and Child Development Varsharani Gaikwad's promise to MiD DAY (published on November 7), it has surfaced that the crucial DNA test has not been done in the case of a 13-year-old rape victim's baby girl even after seven days of her birth.

The rape victim delivered the baby on January 25 at General Hospital. The test has not been conducted despite the Vadgaon Maval police investigation officer stating that soon after the victim's delivery a DNA sample of her baby would be taken and cross-matched with two minor boys detained in the case to ascertain the child's father and victim's rapist.

The victim was raped and impregnated at Vidyavati Ashram, an orphanage at Kanhephata. The matter came to light in October, and it was reported in MiD DAY on November 3.

During the course of investigation, the Vadgaon Maval police detained a 12-year-boy, also an inmate of the ashram, for raping the girl. Later, Sub-Inspector Seema Dhakane, the investigating officer, detained another boy in the case after the victim told the police that one more boy from the ashram had raped her.

The DNA samples of the two minor suspects were also not taken, and the reason being stated is lack of approval from the Juvenile Justice Board.

This happened after the suspect'su00a0 counsel argued before the court on Wednesday that the process of collecting DNA samples would inflict mental torture on the two minor boys.
