Bangalore music composers talk about their favourite Lata number as she turns 80

Musicians in Bangalore shared their admiration for Lata Mangeshkar with MiD DAY a day after she turned 80.

They also walked down memory lane to pick out the one Lata melody that just wouldn't fade away, and recalled their efforts to work with the legend.

She has ruled the music world for decades with her extraordinary voice. She knows more about ragas than music directors and I like her dedication to the profession.

Sayonara (Love in Tokyo) is my favorite Lata song. It is based on Mohana raga, which Hindustani musicians call Bhoop. It was very famous in its time. It is sung like a Japanese melody.

I got a chance to meet her a few months ago, and she heard my one of the tunes from the film Ee Sambashane, sung Kunal Ganjawala. She appreciated it.

I think no singer in India is greater than Lata Mangeshkar.u00a0

My favourite Lata song is Aapki nazarome samjha from the film Anpad, with music by Madan Mohan. It is a classic composition. It is in the style of a ghazal, and thanks to her talent, it is a gem.u00a0

I once sent a tune with lyrics to Lataji for a film called Gandhi Smiles. I met her and she asked me to make the tune in a lower pitch. Around that time, she had a problem and her doctor told her not to speak or sing for a while.

I recorded the song in the voice of Mangala Ravi. Lata said I should keep it. But I've been waiting for an opportunity to work with her.

All of us used to see her at Sahara and Western Outdoor recording studios in Mumbai. We used to call her Lata didi. My favorite song is Jiya jale from Dil Se. She has sung it with energy. I plan to get her voice for some Kannada songs, but I don't know if it will happen. Personally I admire her talent.u00a0u00a0

Lata's songs are simple to listen to but very difficult to sing. That's her speciality. My favorite song is Hey maalik tere bande hum, from the film Do Aank Barah Haat. It is melodious, and it has a message. It haunted me.
More than once, I tried to get her to sing for Kannada films, but things didn't work out. It will be a great honour if she agrees to sing.
