The University of Pune (UoP), which was recently assessed by a team of experts on behalf of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), has received an 'A' grade, the highest accreditation possible.

The university, which had previously also this grade along with a five-star rating, maintained its position under the new evaluation system.

Vice-Chancellor Dr R K Shevgaonkar said the university had received the A grade, having got 3.1 out of 4 grading points. "We were expecting more points, but may be they (NAAC team) felt otherwise," said Shevgaonkar. "The team appreciated the quality of teaching, new initiatives and courses and the automation of records; the maximum they pointed out was some shortcomings in the infrastructure on campus. We are working to resolve the issues pointed out."

The NAAC team consisted of nine members headed by S P Thagarajan from Bangalore University, who submitted their report to the University Grants Commission. The ranking was announced at a late evening meeting of NAAC's governing council on Saturday.u00a0

Both the internal assessment of the university and external assessment of the NAAC team are factors in deciding the accreditation.
