Given the dangerousness of the suspect, the police asked any witness "not to intervene yourself". Ten months after the deadly terrorist attack in January, calm was broken once against Friday night in the French capital where explosions and shootings took place in Paris 10th and 11th district and its northern suburb.

Earlier on Saturday, French President Francois Hollande revealed that "the act of absolute barbarism" was "an act of war" organised from abroad by the Islamic State with internal complicities. IS on Saturday claimed responsibility for the attacks in a statement issued online.

France, of which border controls are heightened, has been in state of emergency since Saturday morning. A three-day mourning was ongoing in France.
