The fire, the cause of which was said to be a short circuit, was brought under control by the Naidu Hospital fire brigade around 2.30 pm.

Besides uniforms, other things such as mosquito nets, boots and blankets used for NCC camps were also destroyed, said Principal Dr Bhagwan Thakur. "Thank god the fire was brought under control and did not spread to the adjoining room where rifles were kept," he said. Usually, there are no armoury units in colleges, but there is one at Wadia.

The storeroom had recently been shifted to its current location. "Our NCC office and storeroom was earlier in the boy's hostel on the college campus. It was shifted for the renovation of the hostel building," said N M Andar, secretary, Wadia college.

Chief Fire Officer Prashant Ranpise said the fire at the armoury division in Wadia college was the first incident of the kind in the past 25 years.

"I remember only three fire incidents at Fergusson College and one at Wadia college some years ago in the last two decades, and all occurred in the laboratories," he said.

The fire brigade said a short circuit was to blame for the fire.

u00a0"A short circuit caused the fire," said Dattatraya Nagalkar, assistant divisional officer, fire brigade.
