A railway police head constable from Borivli in Mumbai lost his life on Tuesday after teachers, who were protesting near the venue of the state cabinet meeting at the Aurangabad divisional commissionerate, allegedly turned violent and pelted stones.
Nine others suffered injuries in the incident. The deceased policeman has been identified as Rahul Kamble. According to a report in the timesofindia, police were forced to burst teargas shells and resort to lathicharge in order to control the mob. More than 100 teachers, including some women, were injured owing the police action, the report further stated.
The protests took place even as Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and state ministers were in the cabinet meeting. The cops rounded up 35 people, and took them to City Chowk police station. Representatives from the teachers' side alleged that political parties were behind instigating the mob that attacked cops. Members of the Wina Anudan Shala Kriti Samiti Morcha, and some others were protesting against the government, claiming they were ignoring the demands of teachers in unaided schools.
The timesofindia report also claimed that, as a precautionary measure, cops stopped all rallies and protesters at Aam Khas grounds, near the divisional commissionerate. Later, some protesters joined them as they looked to head towards the commissionerate. Cops called in the fire brigade to spray jets of water at them. They then resorted to mild lathicharge.
Police commissioner Amitesh Kumar defended the police action. He told timesofindia, "The teachers were very angry. While protesting, they used abusive language against the education minister on the loudspeaker."
