A task as simple as answering the telephone gave a 75-year-old woman the shock of her life, when the caller at the other end let loose a string of vulgar and sexually explicit abuses.

Learning from her granddaughter that the phone calls had become a frequent phenomenon, the outraged woman immediately asked her granddaughter to lodge a police complaint.

The complainant, a 35-year-old mother of two, then approached the Vakola police to lodge a police complaint. She also approached the MTNL department, which informed her that many other women in her locality have been receiving similarly lewd phone calls. The complainant started receiving such lewd calls on her landline since May 3. The phone stalker identified himself as screen printer in a private company that has its office in Vakola.

Cops traced the company, only to realise that the calls were not being made from that address. "The caller knew that I was a mother, and was even aware of my daily routine, like when I leave the house," said the victim. The woman, who has been a resident of Vakola for the past 10 years and is a widow, even submitted an application with MTNL to divert all the calls from her landline number to her mobile number, so the source of the phone calls could be traced: the service was activated May 7, but the phone calls seemed to be coming from a computerised telephone number.

"The woman said that the MTNL authorities had received complaints from two firms - Anitha Art Printer and J M Mehta Tours & Travels - regarding a similar slew of vulgar phone calls. Rajendra Pardesi, senior inspector of Vakola police station, said, "The complaint has been lodged and now we will verify the identification details the caller gave."u00a0
