A young woman was brutally stabbed by her former fianc ufffd at 10 pm last night, a few blocks from Balaji Theatre in Vanarpet. Vijayalakshmi (28), and S Karthik (28), fell in love eight years ago and were all set to be married in November last year. The wedding was abruptly called off by the bride-to-be just hours before tying the knot because of an argument between the two families.

Ratnamma, Vijayalakshmi's mother, said, "He threatened to kill her and I didn't like his words. I didn't want them to get married and I don't even know how they met. We agreed to the wedding after his parents came to see us."

After being scorned, Karthik spent the past four months trying to reconcile, but Vijayalakshmi avoided or snubbed him. During one such encounter last night, unable to contain his emotions, Karthik stabbed her in the chest and abdomen with a knife.

She was rushed to St Philomena's Hospital by BJP ward president K Mohan, who was passing by when she stumbled into his path.u00a0 Mohan, said, "I was here to inspect the drainage work when I saw her completely drenched in blood, so I immediately took her to the hospital."

Karthik surrendered at the Vivek Nagar police station and has been arrested for attempt to murder. A senior police official, said, "He has been charged, but we are not sure what exactly happened. It's possible that she may be involved with someone else, which could be the reason for the attack."
