Forty techies started Project Kamadhenu to protect Indian cow breeds from overslaughter and extinction
The humble cow has now found champions to protect them from indiscriminate slaughter.
A group of forty techies from companies such as Motorola, IBM, HP and Tech Mahindra started the initiative Project Kamadhenu in August 2008.
"We protect indigenous cow breeds," said Nagraj Trivedi from Motorola who founded Project Kamadhenu.
"There are norms to follow when sending cows for slaughter, but people kill them indiscriminately, pushing some breeds to extinction," he said.u00a0u00a0
According to the Mysore Preventive of Cow Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 1964, a cow should be sent for slaughter only after a vet's approval.
"But in Bangalore and other cities in the state, the act is constantly violated."
The techies visit temples every weekend and educate visitors about the impact of the slaughter. They also educate the public on the medicinal value of products derived from such Indian breeds. In fact, they also have a CD on the topic.
The team have invested close to Rs 70,000 has now adopted ten cows.
They plan on using social networking sites to promote their cause and start an online campaign, apart from setting up a rescue helpline for the cows.
They will three goshales this month.
"We are concentrating to increase the number of engineers in our association. With increasing number we will start operating in all parts of the state step by step," Nagraj said.
