Residents say BWSSB ignoring them; officials claim they have not received a single complaint

Residents from six streets in LBS Nagar, Indira Nagar have resorted to living off bottled water ever since their taps started spewing sewage-contaminated water. The problem, which began about a week ago, has left many residents ill. Members of the neighbourhood complained of upset stomachs, fevers and other ailments. Residents took to complaining to the BWSSB on Monday, but with black water flowing through their pipes, residents here wonder if they'll ever see clean drinking water again.

Mathilda SatyaKumar (34), a 2nd Cross resident, said, "We've been using pieces of clothing to strain the water but that doesn't work. The smell from the water says it all. She added, "How can we drink this? How can we let our kids drink it?"

Sampath C (55), another resident said, " We went to the BWSSB office a few days ago and they simply say the problem will continue for another three days. The executive engineer just sat in his air conditioned room and has done nothing to help us so far. We have to pay to have our tanks cleaned, and the insult to injury is that we pay the BWSSB for the dirty water we're being supplied with."

T Venkatraju, executive engineer, BWSSB, said, "I inspected that area myself just a few days ago but we're not aware of how severe the problem is. The people from the area had a lot of complaints and I was not particularly reminded of any single problem. I have not met any of these people, nor has a written complaint reached me."
