The literacy scheme introduced by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) at Tihar Jail has its first feather in the cap. A few days ago, a batch of 161 students appeared for examinations, for the first time inside the Tihar Jail, said sources.

In all, as many as 1,600 inmates are studying under the scheme and the next examination will held on August 20. "Inmates are taught basics, such as alphabet and counting. Students are from different jails and there are two level of exams-A and B. Those who pass the level A, apply for level B.

Then, they would be awarded with certificates. The results will come within a week," said the Tihar officials. Besides this, officials said they are also planning to introduce a course on computers.u00a0

The drive, a part of the 'Padho aur padhao' scheme, launched by Tihar authorities along with the National Literacy Mission Programme of the HRD Ministry, has encouraged inmates to volunteer as teachers. Jamia Millia Islamia has also joined hands for the cause. The programme was inaugurated by Delhi high court chief justice Dipak Misra.
