Taking cue from Kerala and Gujarat, the state government with the help of the Regional Transport Office (RTO) will now upload the entire vehicle registration list on its website. It will have all the relevant information about the owners and their vehicles.

Representation picMember of Legislative Council from the city Mohan Joshi, who is chairing the vehicle transport committee at the assembly session, said, "Details of at least 1.33 crore vehicles shall be uploaded on the website that are registered in the city and nine other RTOs in the state."
Previously, information of registered vehicles was available only with the RTO. "Now, once the registration number is available, any information about the vehicle can be procured with just a click of the mouse. The police will no longer have to wait for the RTO to provide the information on vehicles, Joshi said. "I expect that the entire work should start from June 1."u00a0
Chandrakant Kharatmal, RTO Pune division, said he was aware of the new development and his office had already computerised registration of vehicles. "We are ready to transfer our entire data to the government and it may not take much time," he said. "The entire work of uploading of the information can be done in stages."
u00a0Registration includes name and address of the vehicle owner, his licence and permit number.
"Land line and mobile numbers shall also be added to the information though it is not compulsory," Kharatmal said.
Shankar Kumbhar, traffic police constable at Tilak Road, welcomed the idea of uploading all the vehicle registration information on the Internet. "Now the investigation of stolen vehicles can be speeded up as we have started using mobile Internet devise."u00a0u00a0u00a0
