CVC gathers 5,000 documents from the Games OC office and other departments to aid probe

The CVC has gathered more than 5,000 documents including contract, payment and third party inspection report details from various civic and construction agencies in connection with alleged corruption in the conduct of Commonwealth Games.

Records have also been collected from the Games Organising Committee office and are being examined by the CVC. "Our teams are regularly visiting OC headquarters and gathering information related to corruption complaints and cases being investigated by us. We have collected about 5,050 or so odd official papers in connection with our probe," a CVC official said.

He said the documents are being scanned and will soon be uploaded on the Commission's portal. The anti-corruption watchdog is inquiring into over 30 complaints of graft in Municipal Corporation of Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Council, Delhi Development Authority, Public Works Department, Sports Ministry, Delhi Government and OC among others.

The Commission has seized papers like initial offers floated for construction, consortium (which undertook the job) information, hiring of equipment, overlay materials and employment details beside others. Comptroller and Auditor General of India, the High Level Committee under the Chairmanship of V K Shunglu, Income Tax department and Central Bureau of Investigation are also looking into various aspects of fraud and criminal conspiracy in the conduct of mega sporting event held here last year.

High roller?

The initial total budget estimated by the Indian Olympic Association in 2003 for hosting the Games was Rs 1,620 crore . In 2010, however, the official total budget escalated to an estimated Rs 11,500 crore, a figure which excluded non-sports-related infrastructure development. Just the cost of construction of five Games venues by Central Public Works Department had escalated by over Rs 1,110 crore than the original sanctioned amount.
