K Ganesh, the prime accused, used to supply the ghee in the open market, where majority of his customers are small time shop keepers.

The shopkeepers who used to get the ghee at a throwaway price, used to sell the same to people from the outskirts visiting city, at a marginal profit.

ACP HS Dugappa said Ganesh had been running this racket for quite some time. CCB officials are also on the lookout for his accomplices who are part of this racket.

Ganesh would mix turmeric into cheap edible oil to give it colour. "This ghee is hazardous to health as consumption results in diarrhea," Dugappa said adding that since the consumers have mostly been travellers, no complaints have been filed so far.

Ganesh used to target shopkeepers in markets where people visit from in and around the city.

"We have seized adulterated ghee and material worth Rs 6 lakh from him and have booked him under the Prevention of Food and Adulteration Act.
