'My nephew doesn't know his mom's dead'

Slain techie Smita Satpute's brother, Pawan Hagavane, gives an insight into her troubled life

"Smita and Deepak were married in July 2004 and things were difficult from the beginning. Her mother-in-law had wanted to get Deepak married to her brother's daughter. However, that girl married someone else, so she never accepted Smita as her daughter-in-law.

Every time there was some dispute between them, members from both families would meet to find a solution. But Smita's mother-in-law would just find new grounds to fire the dispute again.

My mother and I shifted to Pune from Nashik in 2006 to support Smita when her divorce case started. We stayed in a rented flat. But Deepak, who had filed for divorce, later realised he had no grounds for divorce and came forward to patch up with Smita. We thought everything was fine between them. We now realise that wasn't the case.

It is hard to believe that my sister is no more. In fact, Smita's son is still unaware about what has happened to his mother. We are trying to shield him from the harsh truth as much as possible.

Now, we just want justice. My sister's killer should get maximum punishment.
