Mumbai: New strain, drop in temp during monsoon will lead to surge in Covid-19 cases, say experts
A new strain of Covid-19 (BA.2.12.2) and a dip in the temperature with the arrival of the monsoon will lead to a surge in the novel Coronavirus infections. A set of experts mid-day had spoken to earlier this year were the first to hint about the likely rise in cases by June. With cases already rising over the past few weeks, the experts have stressed the need for the public to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour.
Four 1993 blast accused reveal why they betrayed Mumbai
The four absconding terrorists arrested in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case have told the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) that they were brainwashed by Dawood Ibrahim’s gang member Mohammad Dossa. Sources in the Gujarat ATS, which arrested Sayyed Qureshi, Shoeb Qureshi, Yusuf Bhatka and Abu Bakar in May, said they told cops that Mohammad instigated them by misleading them about the atrocities committed against the Muslim community during the 1992 riots and convinced them to join D-Company.
Mumbai Metro Line 9: Won't give land, take your car shed elsewhere, locals tell MMRDA
Around a hundred villagers from Rai Gaon, Morve and Murdha attended the public consultation meeting held by the MMRDA on June 7 and told the authority that they will not give their land for building a car shed for Dahisar-Mira Bhayandar Metro line 9. A total of 457 applications have been given by villagers to MMRDA to conduct social impact assessment and environment impact assessment.
Mumbai: 3,431 fined on Day 1 of action against helmetless bikers and pillion riders
As many as 3,431 pillion riders were fined by traffic police on Day 1 of action against bikers and pillion riders without helmets. Riders were unhappy with the move and said helmets for pillion riders are unnecessary. On May 25, the police commissioner had instructed traffic cops to take action against bikers whose pillion riders were not wearing helmets. The traffic department had given 15 days’ time to bikers for compliance, failing which they would be penalised.
Mumbai: After 40 minutes of rainfall, Bhandup-Sonapur junction gets waterlogged
The scene at the Bhandup-Sonapur junction on Thursday night (June 9) washed away the BMC’s claims made just a few days ago—‘Mumbai won’t flood even if it rains at 60-70 mm per hour’. However, after just 40 minutes of rainfall, the junction was waterlogged and the rainwater hadn’t completely receded even by the next day. This caused heavy traffic jams on the LBS road, which could be cleared only by Friday afternoon (June 10).
