The Vanrai police are in the process of registering an FIR against Harjinder Singh, son of godwoman Radhe Maa, and Vicky Gupta, director of MM Mithaiwala, in connection with a forgery case registered by a Malad-based developer.

According to Ashok Jain, managing director of Brijwasi Builders, Gupta and Singh had approached him in 2017 claiming that the latter was a tenant of a building, Verma Wadi, in Malad East, which the builder is redeveloping.

They allegedly produced two rent receipts to prove the authenticity of their claims. The receipts were issued by Ajay Surve and Santosh Mahajan, the former owners of the building. Singh allegedly claimed that he was renting a commercial and residential flat on the first floor of the building.

However, when Jain approached Surve to verify the claims, the latter said that he never issued any receipt to Singh. The builder also alleged that when he approached the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the building's tenants, he realised that Singh had deceived him.

Jain told mid-day, "Singh and Gupta had approached us and had shown us two rent receipts issued by Surve and Mahajan. I believed them to be authentic. I also issued two rent receipts favouring Singh as I have known his associate Vicky Gupta for a very long time. But when I approached Surve, he denied having issued the receipts in the first place."

He added, "I even checked with local tenants and the BMC. Singh was never a tenant. We issued a notice to Singh to prove the documents' authenticity; he never replied. On July 21, we approached the police to register a NC. The police have noted my statement and will soon take down more statements."

Jain said, "Surve and Mahajan had bought the building, which had been auctioned off by the BMC, and had sold it to Aggarwal Builders. Brijwasi Builders had bought the plot from Aggarwal Builders. "Surve and Mahajan are owners and all the others were tenants under the pagdi system. Harjinder Singh claimed to be one such tenant," Jain said.

According to sources, the FIR should be registered in a week as the police are recording some statements. Jain also alleged that Gupta's men allegedly threatened him, saying, "Kuch nahi hoga hamari poach bahut upar tak hai."

Gupta, meanwhile, said, "Harjinder and I have provided genuine documents to the developer. We have registered a complaint against the builder in the high court. Everything is now sub judice."

He also alleged that Singh had been dragged into the matter because he's famous, stating, "He is a high-profile person, they (Brijwasi builders) should have approached the court. Why to do this police natak?"

When contacted, Singh told this reporter to talk to his lawyer. However the latter, Girish Kedia, did not respond to the calls or WhatsApp messages. Senior Police Inspector Rampiyare Gopinath Rajbhar said, "We are recording the statements. Based on them, an FIR will be registered."
