Maharashtra SSC results 2023 declared: Post-pandemic class struggles

The state's as well as the Mumbai division's pass percentage of Std X board result dropped by over 3 per cent, as compared to the previous year. The state board chief said the major reason behind the drop was the pandemic's impact on students' writing and learning abilities.

Many factors may have led to this decline, the major one being the impact of the pandemic-induced lockdown on the learning abilities of the students, and the effective anti-copying campaign that we conducted during the exams across the state."

The pass percentage of the Std X or Secondary School Certificate result dropped by 3.11 per cent in Maharashtra to 93.83 per cent and by 3.28 per cent in Mumbai division to 93.66 per cent. Last year, it was 96.94 per cent for Mumbai, and 96.94 for Maharashtra.

Sharad Gosavi, the chairman of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE), said, "Owing to the pandemic and online learning, lenient conditions were implemented for two years, including reduction of syllabus. This year, the syllabus was back to 100 per cent.

"Also, results fluctuate from batch to batch, and the difficulty of the question papers has an impact on the pass percentage. This year, we also stopped granting students extra 15 minutes after distributing the question paper, which was done previously," he added.

Gosavi said the drop was commensurate with the reduction in the pass percentage of practically all exams conducted by all board exams at the state and national levels, not only MSBSHSE exams.

Among the nine divisions, Konkan ranked No. 1 in the state, with a pass percentage of 98.11 per cent, while the Nagpur division ranked the lowest with 92.05 per cent. Mumbai division ranked fourth.

Across Maharashtra, 75 per cent (4,89,455) students have secured a distinction and (60 per cent) 5,26,210 scored first class. The respective percentages are the same for the Mumbai division, too, where six students scored 100 per cent out of 151 students across Maharashtra. Most students (101) with 100 per cent score are from Latur. The results are based on the average of the best of five subjects.
