Rekha Dhobi, the deceased
A heated argument, over returning money paid to her husband due to his alleged shoddy work, proved costly for a 26-year-old woman on Thursday. The Ghatkopar resident died when the woman who was demanding the money back hit her with a rolling pin on her head and pushed her. The accused woman has been arrested.
The police said the accused, Mamta Uke, 51, had paid the deceased's husband Rs 40,000 for civil work. But she felt the work was not done properly. The police said Uke kept calling Ashish Dhobi and demanding back the money paid to him. After some time, Dhobi stopped answering her calls. Enraged, Uke went to Dhobi's house on Thursday morning.
"Uke went to Dhobi's place around 7.30 am, and he was not at home. She started arguing with his wife Rekha, demanding the money from her. The argument led to a scuffle and Uke picked up a wooden rolling pin and hit Rekha on her head with it. She also pushed her and Rekha's head hit the floor. She fell unconscious," said Ravidutt Sawant, senior inspector of Pant Nagar police station. Still angry, Uke went home.
Rekha's friend and mother who had tried to intervene in the scuffle rushed her to Rajawadi Hospital. Doctors at the hospital declared her dead on arrival and informed the Pant Nagar police about the same. The police nabbed Uke from her home. "The deceased was very frail and the impact of the rolling pin proved deadly. We have filed a murder case against Uke and arrested her. She will be produced in court tomorrow," said DCP (Zone 7) Prashant Kadam.
