Keeping your spouse in the dark about your medical history can land you in serious trouble with the law, discovered Jay Vishal Aluwalia (38).

His wife, Simran Kaur (name changed), has filed an FIR at the Goregaon police station against Aluwalia and his parents for cheating and conspiracy.

Said Simran, "During our honeymoon in Thailand, I noticed him popping about a dozen pills and taking insulin shots.

I confronted him and asked him why I hadn't been told and he shouted me down." Simran did not pursue the matter as she believed she should stand by her husband, who used to be employed with a multinational bank.

"Soon after our honeymoon, Jay simply quit his job and sat home drinking the entire day. He often punched me in the face and stomach for no reason," said Simran.

A couple of months into the marriage, however, she changed her mind. "My husband was hospitalised for a kidney problem, but I wasn't told of the ailment.

But then, I accidentally stumbled upon a medical report, which said he had no gall bladder, had acute Pancreatitis (sudden inflammation of the pancreas) and type II Diabetes, which had virtually damaged his kidneys." MiD DAY has acquired a copy of the medical report.

Yet, Simran still stuck by her husband. "Frankly, I was still willing to accept my husband's ailments and stand by him, but I could not tolerate his drinking problem and chewing gutkha, which caused immense mood swings and led to physical and mental trauma."

Then, six months after my marriage, when I visited my brother for rakhi, my in-laws told me not to return and refused to return my stree dhan of almost Rs 3.5 lakh, which includes electronic goods, ornaments and cash," said Simran.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sanjay Banerjee (Zone XI) confirmed that cases had been registered under IPC sections pertaining to dowry harassment, cheating and misappropriation of stree dhan. "We will ensure that the aggrieved party gets justice.

We have arrested the father-in-law, Harkiran Aluwalia. He was produced in court on Tuesday and given bail. Jay and his mother Deepika are absconding and efforts are being made to trace them," said the DCP.

The investigating officer, Inspector Aryal Kasbe, added that efforts were being made to recover the stree dhan and arrest the fugitives.

The police have also appealed to the court that the passports of all three accused be impounded so that they do not flee the country. Simran's father-in-law refused to comment on the case.
