A police constable and his friend, were felicitated on Thursday by the Thane police for averting a possibly major tragedy near Mumbra Reti Bunder station earlier this week.
Malhari Shinde, a resident of Mumbra, was alerted of a rail fracture by a group of boys around 7 pm on Monday. He called his friend and head constable, Deepak Vairagi, of Mumbra police station. Vairagi alerted senior inspector Ravindra Tayade and set out for the spot.
At the spot, Shinde and Vairagi tried to stop an oncoming local train, but the motorman couldn't spot them in the dark. A quick-thinking Vairagi then fished out a red-coloured T-shirt and alerted the motorman with the help of his mobile phone torch.
Deputy Commissioner of Thane police Abhishek Trimukhe lauded the duo for putting their lives at risk.
