A petty fight over an inmate refusing to lend another chewing tobacco resulted in one of them stabbing the other; the victim is currently recuperating at JJ Hospital

In a bizarre incident, an inmate from Thane Mental Hospital attacked another patient for not giving him tobacco. The victim, Vasant Karpe, was rushed to the Thane Civil Hospital after he sustained injuries to his abdomen and back in the attack.

Meanwhile, doctors from the mental hospital said Karpe's attacker, Yamraj Patil, has been shifted to the isolation ward as a precautionary measure. The incident occurred at around 12.30 am on Wednesday. Karpe said Patil woke him up and asked for tobacco.

But the moment he denied having any, Patil got agitated and attacked him with a sharp object. It was one of the on-duty attendants who rushed to Karpe's aid and overpowered Patil before he could inflict grievous injuries. However, Patil had already stabbed Karpe in the stomach and back.

"I don't know why he attacked me. I think he had a syringe in his hand. We had neither fought earlier in the day, nor have an ongoing dispute," Karpe told mid-day. Karpe hails from Bramhagiri, Nashik, and has been undergoing treatment at the mental hospital for the past 15 years.

His parents, who still reside in Nashik, had admitted him to the hospital and are unaware about the latest incident. Karpe was shifted to JJ Hospital later in the day, where he is currently recuperating. Doctors said his condition is stable because the injuries were superficial. Even the mental hospital authorities downplayed the issue.

Doctor speak
"The on-duty attendant handled the situation well. Karpe was given immediate medical care and rushed to the hospital. He is stable and is on oral diet," said a doctor from Thane Mental Hospital. When asked about Patil and his current state, she said the patient suddenly got excited and hyperactive, which triggered the attack.
