With ATMs reopening today, several people across the city were seen visiting ATMs post midnight, hoping to withdraw usable cash. mid-day visited different ATMs in various parts of the city in the early hours of Friday and found many ATMs to be functioning. But while some machines could cough up cash, a few others had run out of it.

We were able to withdraw Rs 100 notes from an ATM in Bandra, but two other booths on the same street were not functioning. We also returned empty-handed from HDFC Bank ATMs at Dadar and Colaba.

Machines not refilled
Several ATMs remained shut till dawn on Friday, apparently because security guards had not been told to open them earlier. Some guards said the machines had not yet been refilled with cash.

Rajkumar Chaurasiya, security official at an HDFC ATM in Bandra, said, "No official has come yet to refill the machines, but the ATM started working at midnight. HDFC customers have been withdrawing cash from here in R100 denominations. But ATMs of some other banks on this street still aren't working."

Suresh Jadhav, a guard outside an SBI ATM in Mahim, said, "We have not received directions to open. No bank official has come in either. People are going back empty- handed."

Problems aplenty
Hussain Khan, an engineering student, tried to withdraw cash at a Kotak Mahindra Bank ATM in Mahim post midnight. While he was delighted to find the machine was operating, it did not supply cash. "It accepted my card, but said it didn't have cash," complained Khan.

Akshay Agarwal, who was at an ICICI ATM in Colaba said, "I have visited ATMs of many banks, but they are either not working or don't have cash. IâÂÂu00c2u0080ÂÂu00c2u0088have been struggling to make ends meet for the past two days."
