A major fire broke out at the furniture market in Oshiwara in western suburbs on Friday afternoon. The cause of fire is unknown.

The fire brigade deployed 16 fire tenders, water tankers and ambulances to combat the blaze in the north-west suburb as it quickly blazed through dry wooden goods.

Efforts were on to contain the conflagration and prevent it from spreading to a huge slum pocket situated in the vicinity.

There were no reports of any casualties so far, the Disaster Control official said.

The fire is suspected to have started after a stray spark from a welding garage hit a gas cylinder, causing an explosion. At least 600 furniture workshops were reduced to ashes by the time the blaze was brought under control around 4.30 pm.

Although no casualties were reported, nearly 30-35 people are reported to have suffered minor injuries while clearing their shops of furniture, wood and other flammable material.
