Officials of the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the city police arrested a builder from Borivli area for usurping ancestral property worth nearly Rs 400 crore, on which his sister and niece had legal rights. This has led to a loss of Rs 50 crore for the duo.
Builder Mandar Ratnakar Chogle was arrested on Wednesday on the charges of criminal conspiracy, forgery and cheating under sections 420, 465, 467, 468, 471 and 120(B) of IPC. Deputy commissioner of police (EOW), S Jaykumar confirmed the development.
As per the complaint filed by Chogle's sister, Dr Padmaja Patil, he had taken her signatures and that of his niece Nrupa Patil at least two times on false pretexts before 2013. Later, Chogle allegedly used the signatures on other documents to prove that they had no right on the property.
The total property includes four plots in Borivli village, Shimpholi and Magathane village. Dr Patil said that she trusted his brother and did not realise that he was playing a game. In the FIR she has alleged that she was duped of property worth Rs 50 crore.
The accused has been remanded in police custody till November 15.
