A day after the Bandra police registered an FIR against an anonymous caller, who had been calling the house of a former Indian cricketer and inquiring about his daughter, the police were able to locate and nab him in West Bengal on Saturday. The 32-year-old accused, identified as Debkumar Maity, has told the police that he had first seen the girl on TV at the cricketer's farewell match at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, and since then had wanted to contact the 20-year-old. He had even got her name tattooed on his forearm along with his name, and he had been sketching her pictures for past several years.

Sources said the accused managed to get hold of the number on January 2, and since then, he had made about 15 calls, until the police were informed. A complaint said that Maity, in the calls, threatened to kidnap the girl if his desire to marry her was not fulfilled. He is unemployed and a school dropout and the police suspect he is mentally unstable. The police said that on Friday evening a complaint was lodged with the Bandra police on behalf of the girl by the cricketer's manager.

The police had managed to get the number that was being used to call their residence, after which it was traced to West Bengal. A team of officers from Bandra police reached the state on Saturday and arrested the caller from his home in Purba Medinipur district, with the help of the Mashadal police, West Bengal. He was produced before the Haldia Court, which granted the Mumbai Police his transit remand. DCP (zone IX) Paramjit Singh Dahiya told mid-day, "The officers have got his transit remand and the accused is being brought to Mumbai."
