Intelligence reports say naval establishments could be attacked

A red alert has been sounded as fresh intelligence inputs indicate that a group of trained marine commandos from Pakistan could strike defence establishments in and around Mumbai.

The reports indicate that warships anchored at the harbour will be attacked.

All naval and Coast Guard ships have been placed on high alert. Security around defence establishments (see box) and ships off Mumbai harbour has been beefed up.

Watch Out: Entry to defence areas has been restricted and checkposts have been installed all along the coast

Entry to defence areas has been restricted to visitors. Jt CP (law and order) Hemanshu Roy said security around the Gateway of India had been tightened due to New Year's Eve.

Assistance of agencies like the Customs and Coast Guard will be sought, he added.

The police have emphasised on the Standard Operation Procedures to guard the shores of the city.

Leaves of all policemen have been cancelled and check posts have been installed at every kilometre along the coast.

However, Naval spokesperson Captain Manohar Nambiar said, "I don't have any knowledge about this."
